About

The California State University-Northridge Laser Lab serves the Department of Geological Sciences and the broader community. We focus on laser ablation applications to geochronology and petrology. We frequently analyze U-Pb isotopes (zircon, titanite, apatite) and trace elements in various phases (glasses, amphibole, pyroxene, zircon) and in solution mode. The Laser Lab consists of a Thermo Fisher Scientific Element2 high-resolution, sector-field, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (SF-ICPMS) and a Thermo iCAP RQ ICPMS. These instruments can be run in solution mode or coupled to our Teledyne Cetec Analyte G2 193nm Excimer laser. The CSUN Laser Lab is located in Chaparral Hall and is co-managed by Professors Joshua Schwartz and Robinson Cecil. Dr. Zhan Peng is the lab manager and runs day-to-day activities in the laboratory.

We would like the opportunity to be co-authors on any publications that result. For inquiries about scheduling time on the CSUN LA-SF-ICPMS or other questions, please contact us at zhan.peng@csun.edu

Analytical Costs

U-Th-Pb analysis of zircon, titanite, and monazite:

  • Igneous samples: $4/analysis, or $120/sample (~30 unknowns) and

  • Detrital samples: $400/sample (~100 unknowns)

BSE or CL imaging of zircon, titanite, and monazite:

  • $100/mount

Cost of mineral separation:

  • $300/sample (includes jaw crushing, disk mill, water table, Frantz magnetic separation and heavy liquids)
